Additional Content
A lot of the matches on the Backlash card are re-hashes of WrestleMania although saying that there is still some great potential for this to be one of the best events of the year.
‘Who Cares’ Match
Singles Match
C.M Punk
Vs.
Kane
Maybe I was a touch harsh with the title of this match, but there’s so little point to it being on the card that I couldn’t come up with anything else. Punk and Kane are quite capable of putting on an entertaining match, but there are other Superstars in rivalries and/or with title belts that could have made much better use of this slot.
M.V.P is in a fledgling feud with Dolph Ziggler and it would have made more sense to have a match for the U.S Championship on the card, rather than next week on Smackdown which further makes a mockery of the roster draft that supposedly kicks in after Backlash.
The sheer lack of point to this one makes me wonder if there is more here than meets the eye and because of that I’m thinking that Punk may cash in his Money in the Bank later in the show should he survive the encounter with The Big Red Machine.
Prediction: I’d love to see Kane get a victory but I’ve resigned myself to the fact that he’s a jobber and as such the win will probably go to Mr. Money in the Bank.
Brother Vs. Brother Match
‘I Quit’ Match
Jeff Hardy
Vs.
Matt HardyHel
Some of my all time favorite matches came when the Hardcore Championship belt was still around, and I hope this one will be along similar lines. Recently nearly all of the matches with rules that govern no count outs, no disqualifications and anything goes stay around the ringside area with perhaps the odd chair shot or announce table bump thrown in for good measure.
I want to see the two guys brawl through the crowd, backstage, dressing rooms, parking lot etc. In the ‘good old days’ guys would end up in the streets, local bars and even the Mississipi river on one occasion, something I’d love to see something similar to these days.
I won’t hold my breath but given what happened at WrestleMania and in the Stretcher match I don’t know where else this feud could go to up the ante.
Prediction: Jeff to win and save face. As much as I’d like to see Matt get another victory, this would mean Jeff speaking which is something I’d pay to avoid seeing.
Legend Killer Match
Singles Match
Chris Jericho
Vs.
Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat
I like Jericho. I like Steamboat. I don’t really like the angle that’s been used.
Steamboat surprised me with just how good he was at Mania and on Raw and I’m expecting this to be quite a high quality, exciting match. Having said that I just don’t feel like I care as much as I should about it, because it’s just been the same thing over and over from Jericho in the build up and I’ll be glad to see an end to it.
Aside from that I’m sure it will be great and I’m hoping for a twist or a sting in the tail at the end of the match.
Prediction: Steamboat to finally chalk a win up for the Legends. Someone could show up to make this one more exciting but I think a Steamboat win will please everyone regardless of if they do.
ECW Championship Match
Singles Match
Christian
Vs.
Jack Swagger (c)
Two fantastic athletes here and I can’t help but feel that both of them would have been more worthy draft picks than some of the guys and girls that got moved a few weeks ago.
Swagger has performed well pretty much every time I’ve seen him and is showing improvement in his promo work (although admittedly there is still a little way to go there) so it was a surprise to me that he was overlooked for WrestleMania. I can only assume that he was either nursing an injury or had really put someone’s back up in the creative department.
It also feels that Christian is being punished a little for the way he left the company, but it’s promising to see him being given the chance to prove himself, firstly in the Money in the Bank and now with a second shot at the ECW Championship.
Should these two gel we could be in for a brilliant bout that will show off ECW’s talent and give a real boost to both guys regardless of the winner.
Prediction: Christian to pick up the win and become the ECW Champion despite ‘nursing and injury’ from being slammed through the table on ECW a few days before.
World Heavyweight Championship Match
Last Man Standing Match
Edge
Vs.
John Cena (c)
Edge and Cena. Cena and Edge. They’ve been saying for weeks now that they’ve done everything they could possibly do to one another and that this will be the last time the two meet.
I agree; they have done pretty much everything and I’m glad that this will be the last time we see them fight for a while. Don’t get me wrong, I think they have had some real stand-out matches and despite my opinions on Cena they do always seem to deliver BUT just because it works, it doesn’t mean I want to see it over and over and over again in numerous re-hashes.
This is actually a really hard one to judge because while Edge would be the obvious choice to win and regain a Heavyweight title for Smackdown, I’m not sure they will be keen on taking the belt away from Cena less than a month after he won it. As I said before I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Punk cashes in the Money in the Bank regardless of the winner and picks up the title making 100% sure it was heading back to Smackdown.
Prediction: If I have to go out on a limb and choose I’d say Edge wins and makes sure Smackdown has a title belt. Although whoever wins Punk could snatch the title from them and set up a feud with Edge.
WWE Championship Match
6-Man Tag Team Match
Randy Orton, Ted DiBiase & Cody Rhodes
Vs.
Triple H (c), Shane McMahon & Batista
This one certainly has the potential to be very interesting in terms of the finish. The possibilities really are endless:
-A member of Priceless could earn their stripes by picking up the win and gaining Orton the title.
-A member of Team Triple H could get DQ’d/lose and incur Triple H’s wrath.
-Batista could pick up the pinfall to retain the Game’s championship then consider himself the No. 1 contender.
and so on and so fourth.
The last match I can remember with stipulations even half way similar to this was when Stone Cold & Triple H teamed against The Undertaker & Kane with the IC, World Heavyweight and Tag Team Championships all on the line. If Taker/Kane picked up the win they would get the Heavyweight title and the partner who didn’t make the cover would get the IC belt, if Austin/Triple H won they would get the Tag Titles.
While that match had more scope for partners to turn on each other (with both Kane and Undertaker wanting the Heavyweight title) this one does still have the possibility of a team implosion and it will definitely be fun waiting for it to happen.
Prediction: Triple H to lose the title because of one of his partners, setting up a triple threat match with Batista and Orton further down the line.
The End
