On with the show….
ECW Championship Match
Singles Match
Jack Swagger (c)
Vs.
Christian
Christian and Swagger will kick things off tonight in what should be a good match.
The referee holds up the vile ECW Title Belt and rings the bell, the match is underway.
Swagger has started this one positively, going on the attack from the word go and being pretty effective in doing so. The commentary team is the same as WrestleMania tonight, Cole, King and J.R calling every match. They are keen to heap praise on Swagger, mainly for the great match he had a few weeks back against John Cena.
Christian is still struggling to get back into this one, despite hitting the Fulcrum Prison Blues and grabbing a very very long 2 count with a Sunset Flip against the run of the match.
After more clubbing blows from Swagger Christian hits a big DDT from the corner and grabs another near fall, before arm dragging his opponent to the outside.
Near falls aplenty in this one as Swagger hits a Splash from the top rope, then Christian gets a roll up and Swagger hits a Oklahoma Slam.
After failing to grab the win Swagger attempts to remove the turnbuckle cover, completely unaware that Christian is doing the same thing in the opposite corner. Christian then played possum until the ‘All-American American’ approached him, before moving and letting Swagger connect with the exposed metal before landing a KillSwitch and picking up the ECW Championship.
Christian wins by Pinfall and becomes the NEW ECW Champion.
Edge & Christian
After the match Christian is congratulated by Dreamer, Finlay and Bourne before spotting Edge and going to speak to him.
Edge asks him if he’s happy and if he now thinks he’s better because he has a Championship belt, then says it’s only a matter of time before he wins a title too.
The Christian asks what gives as his estranged brother used to be fun and now he is a deranged lunatic. Edge informs him that it is all the doing of John Cena and how much he hates him. He says that he’ll be fun again by the end of the night when he is once again crowned the World Heavyweight Championship.
No joyous reunion of one of the best tag teams in WWE history just yet then.
Legend Killer Match
Singles Match
Chris Jericho
Vs.
Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat
Steamboat looks good for his age as he squares up against Jericho and I think this match will surprise a few people.
Steamboat starts strongly and even vaults to the outside landing on Jericho, before hitting some ‘vintage Steamboat’ arm drags and slowing the pace with a submission hold.
Jericho has now regained control of the match and is slapping the Hall of Famer around showing absolutely no respect at all. The crowd are completely behind Steamboat here as you’d expect and keep starting up ‘You’ve still got it’ chants.
Back and forth action here as Steamboat hits another arm drag but quickly gets knocked back down and tied up in a headlock.
Steamboat just hit a massive back body drop from the top rope after pushing Jericho into the turnbuckle to break free from the headlock. 3 near falls in quick succession for The Dragon, before Jericho landed an Enziguri followed by a brutal Bulldog and then locked in the Walls of Jericho.
Steamboat reversed the Walls and then seemed to take an age to lock in a Figure 4 which Jericho eventually escaped from. Steamboat then hits a flying cross body from the top but can’t quite get the 3.
Seconds later he went for another one but Jericho reversed it into a Codebreaker and covered for what looked like a definite three but the veteran got his foot on the rope.
After another near fall for Steamboat, Jericho locked in the Walls of Jericho for a second time and finally made The Dragon tap out to gain yet another win over the Legends of the WWE. Great performance from Steamboat who gets a ‘Thank You Steamboat’ chant and a fantastic reception as he gets back to his feet and leaves the ring.
Chris Jericho wins by Submission.
Santino/Santina and Beth Phoenix
Santino and Beth have a short segment backstage in which the Glamazon begs Santino to admit that he is actually Santina. He refuses to, instead trying to get Beth to fill in and kiss Khali for him. She refuses and then says that she won’t be kissing Santino any more either.
Pretty pointless segment and more than likely a good indication of the Kiss Cam bit coming up later.
Grudge Match
Singles Match
Kane
Vs.
C.M Punk
I’m personally not looking forward to this one, but who knows, maybe they’ll surprise me.
Nothing amazing so far, it’s not been terrible but I don’t see why it’s made it onto the Backlash card at the expense of a U.S Championship match or something else with a little more on the line.
Kane started the match with the upper hand but Punk has fought his way back into things.
Punk goes for a GTS but can’t pull it off, seconds later Kane scores a massive right hand and grabs a long 2 count before Punk reverses a powerslam and locks in a cross armbreaker… *Yawn*.
Punk avoids a Chokeslam as Kane’s arm buckles, but moments later The Big Red Machine adjusts his style and uses both arms to lift Punk and drive him to the mat to pick up the three count. A much deserved win and one that made this match just about bearable.
Kane wins by Pinfall.
Brother Vs. Brother Match
I Quit Match
Jeff Hardy
Vs.
Matt Hardy
Jeff makes his way to the ring without his bizarre face paint tonight, could it be he’s actually shaking off the ‘Doink in the making’ gimmick? King also picked up on the lack of face paint, saying Jeff hasn’t wasted time painting his face and has rather spent the time focusing on the match.
Jeff gains an early advantage, vaulting the top rope and taking Matt down before slamming him into the guard rail and hitting a massive (and I mean MASSIVE) flying kick using the steel steps for leverage.
Jeff continues to dominate and I don’t think Matt has hit a single move yet.
Jeff locks on a sleeper while the commentary team ponder how you would win an I Quit match if your opponent passes out, before Matt escapes and seconds later throws Jeff from the top rope all the way to the outside where he landed awkwardly.
The referee asks Jeff if he wants to quit but he simply says ‘no’ and things continue. Too much microphone time for Jeff already in my opinion.
It’s all Matt now as he works on Jeff’s leg which seems to have taken a knock when he fell to the outside. As Matt locks on submission after submission the referee asks Jeff numerous times if he wants to give it up. Jeff is beginning to sound like something out of an old video game, spitting out the same little sound bytes over and over; ‘No!’ ‘Forget it!’ ‘No’ ‘Forget it!’.
Jeff hits a massive Whisper in the Wind out of nowhere and suddenly he is in charge of the match again. Matt taps out to a Texas Cloverleaf (something you don’t see every day) but it means nothing and as he didn’t say ‘I Quit’ the match continues.
Jeff hits a couple of Swanton Bomb’s before grabbing some hardware from under the ring, namely a table. Matt goes for a Twist of Fate on the outside but Jeff reverses it and hits one of his own, before sliding his brother back into the ring and laying him on the table.
Jeff then grabs a roll of tape and some ropes, then straps Matt’s arms and legs together before tying him securely to the table. He then gets a sets up a ladder and climbs to the top as Matt pleads with him to reconsider, saying he loves him and wants to re-form the Hardy Boys.
Just as it looks like Jeff might fly from the ladder Matt says he quits and the referee rings the bell. Jeff makes his way down the ladder as the crowd boo, but then decides to jump anyway and comes crashing down on Matt with a leg drop.
Jeff Hardy wins by Pinfall.
Orton calls out Batista
For the second time this week Todd Grisham is told to be quiet when trying to interview a Raw superstar. He begins to ask Orton a question about tonight’s match but the No. 1 contender cuts him off and says he wants to address Batista.
He explains that since the days of Evolution he has gone on to form his own faction; Legacy, whereas Batista has is still in the pocket of Triple H. He tells him to be careful not to get disqualified and lose The Game the title, the questions if that is what he actually wants to happen.
The Khali Kiss Cam
Santina makes her/his way to the ring and says that s/he has a confession to make; she isn’t what she says she is. She then drops the bombshell that she is…. already in love with someone else!
*Yawn*
Khali says he wants to know who it is and after a little stalling Santina says that it is J.R, claiming he has been courting her since Mania and calls her his ‘little Slobberknocker’.
Ok so maybe I was wrong about this segment.
King ribs J.R, who is understandably bemused and Runjin Singh says that Santina doesn’t have to kiss Khali, as long as s/he kisses J.R.
Even Cole begins to poke fun at ‘Mr BBQ Man’ (as Santina had referred to J.R earlier), before Beth Phoenix interjects herself and challenges Santina for her Miss WrestleMania title right here, right now. Khali is annoyed that Beth has interfered in his business and the two have a set to in which she refers to him as an idiot and insults every punjabi woman around the globe.
Khali gives Beth a chop to the head and Santina covers her to retain the Miss WrestleMania crown, before Khali accidentally rips off Santina’s bikini top and s/he flee’s to the back attempting to cover up.
Not as bad as I expected actually, things are always funnier when J.R gets dragged into them and I’m sure King and Cole will continue the digs as the night progresses.
WWE Championship Match
3 on 3 Tag Team Match
Triple H (c), Shane McMahon & Batista
Vs.
Randy Orton, Ted DiBiase & Cody Rhodes
I’m surprised this isn’t the main event tonight because I think it has the most potential ’shock value’. That being said, this bodes well for my prediction of a C.M Punk Money in the Bank cash in and title win at the climax of the show.
Team Triple H seem to be on the same page as they enter the ring, showing solidarity as Legacy make their way down the ramp.
The match begins in an explosion as Triple H dives for Orton and chases him up the ramp and the to back before the bell rings. With Orton nowhere to be seen and Triple H back in the ring the referee makes the decision to start the match and we now have a 3 on 2 situation.
Batista starts the match and destroys Cody Rhodes, then tags in Shane who hits a few elbows and tags in Triple H. Priceless look hopeless without their leader and unless Orton re-appears soon this could be over quickly.
Team Triple H now seem to be having a little fun as Batista holds Rhodes in a standing Supplex for what seems to be an age while goading DiBiase.
Orton appears a few moments later and jumps Batista who had been bringing DiBiase back to the ring, before slamming The Animal’s head into the ring post and gaining the upper hand for Legacy.
After some quick tags keeping The Animal isolated, Orton delivers his trademark DDT and puts Legacy firmly in control. Batista looks for a tag on numerous occasions but can’t see to quite make it until he hits a massive shoulder and brings Shane into the match.
Shane makes light work of all three guys and strips the announce table before coming to his senses and hitting a big elbow from the top rope instead. DiBiase makes the save as Shane covers and whips him into the steel steps, once again putting Legacy in control.
Orton just hit one of the best standing dropkicks I’ve ever seen, getting enough height to hit Shane’s temple with both boots. Shane is in a bad way and much like Batista a few minutes back desperately needs a tag.
Just as DiBiase looked like he might hit ‘Dream Street’ and win the title for his mentor, Shane reversed into a DDT. A double tag brings Triple H and Orton together once more and The Game almost picks up the win with a ‘Double A’ Spinebuster.
Things are breaking down! DiBiase breaks up a pin, Batista knocks him to the outside and the two brawl. Rhodes breaks up a potential Pedigree and hits a big DDT, before Shane sends him flying to the outside.
On the outside Rhodes drills Shane with a steel chair before setting his sights on Batista. Batista knocks it from his hand as Triple H sets up a Pedigree inside the ring, but then goes to swing it himself forcing Triple H to abandon the Pedigree and snatch the chair away to prevent the disqualification.
Orton hits the RKO and goes for the cover which gets a 2 count (the bell rang and left everyone confused although the referee did clearly signal that it was a 2.)
In all the confusion Orton hit the most devastating Punt I’ve ever seen, then covered to get a legitimate 3 and win the WWE Championship.
After Legacy leave the ring medics crowd around The Game as the commentators speculate how long he will be out for.
Randy Orton wins by Pinfall and becomes the NEW WWE Champion.
World Heavyweight Championship Match
Last Man Standing Match
John Cena (c)
Vs.
Edge
The last match was fantastic to watch (although incredibly hard to write up, with so much going on at once) and so these two guys will really have to pull out the stops if they want to top it.
After a lot of tension building the match gets under way, with both men going for their finishers early but neither being successful.
Edge hits some high impact moves and puts Cena down for a 6 count, then locks on a sleeper when he gets back to his feet putting him down again this time for a count of 7.
Once back on his feet Cena cranks it up a gear and hits a flurry of offence, but Edge is quick to put a stop to it and locks in a Sharpshooter.
On the outside Cena gets knocked down for another 7 count, before both guys end up crashing into the steel steps a few times resulting in referee’s counts.
Cena eventually brings the base of the steps into the ring, although it took him a few attempts to do so. Edge takes advantage and uses them to pin Cena into the corner, before delivering a running dropkick to gain another 6 count.
After tossing Edge to the outside Cena mustered enough strength to lift the steps once more and launch them over the top rope at Edge, knocking the Rated R Superstar down for a long long count.
Back in the ring both men slug it out, with every Cena punch drawing a ‘boo’ and every Edge shot eliciting a cheer from the crowd, before both men are knocked down for a double 7 count.
After a counter-fest Edge hits a backdrop and goes to deliver a Five Knuckle Shuffle of his own, but Cena reverses and locks in the STFU. Edge taps but it’s irrelevant.
Spear from Edge! Both men are down and another double count begins. Both men get back to their feet by 7 and somehow Cena hits an ‘Attitude Adjustment’ from the top rope!
Cena gets to his feet at 5 and Edge is showing no signs of movement. Edge makes it to his feet on 9 and the match continues!
Another Spear from Edge! With the help of the ropes a bloody-mouthed Cena makes it to his feet and beats the count before falling out of the ring. Edge doesn’t wait for another count and instead drags Cena onto the announce table, but Cena takes advantage and hits the Attitude Adjustment IN TO the crowd!
Edge just beats the count as the crowd members he landed on will him to do so. Edge flees to the backstage area but adly they don’t spend too long there before they are back in the ringside area, where Cena hits a running bulldog from the steps onto some handily placed equipment boxes.
Edge beats the count and now both guys are at the top of the ramp. DDT on the steel from Edge, who then heads backstage and gets a chair.
Con-Chair-To on the steel staging! This one has to be over!
Cena beats the count and looks like he might hit an Attitude Adjustment off the staging, but from nowhere The Big Show appears and Chokeslam’s Cena into a huge spotlight which explodes in that firework’y way most WWE electrical items do.
Cena remains lifeless inside the metal drum as the referee counts the 10 and Edge wins the match. Paramedics rush out to tend to Cena as Edge sits clutching the title before looking worried as the show went off the air.
I thought Edge might win this one but I didn’t expect it to be in this way. A Cena/Big Show rivalry doesn’t excite me too much but it’ll be interesting to see who steps up to face Edge on Smackdown now.
Edge wins and becomes the NEW World Heavyweight Champion.
The End
Well that’s it from Backlash. A surprisingly good Pay Per View which surpassed all expectations I had. All three championships changed hands and two of the Superstars losing the gold looked to be seriously hurt.
Will Edge’s victory lead to a face turn for the Rated R Superstar?
How long will Triple H be out for?
Will Batista challenge Orton in The Game’s absence?
Was J.R’s shocked face the best part of the Pay Per View?
