Backlash 2009 Confirmed Matches
Find out what matches are currently scheduled to take place at Backlash 2009.
Singles Match
C.M Punk
Vs.
Kane
Kane and Punk were both drafted to Smackdown during live 3 hour special Raw and continued the feud they began during the Money in the Bank Ladder Match at WrestleMania.
This match could have been way more important had the Money in the Bank briefcase been on the line, without it this one just feels like padding.
Brother Vs. Brother Match
‘I Quit’ Match
Jeff Hardy
Vs.
Matt Hardy
The feud between the Hardy’s seems to have gone slightly off the boil following WrestleMania and despite Matt being drafted to Raw both brothers have continued to attack each other for different reasons. Sick of living in his brother’s shadow Matt has become bitter and twisted, deciding the only way to really shine in the WWE is to be the only Hardy brother around. Jeff wants revenge for what happened at WrestleMania as well as the numerous beatings he has been the victim of from someone he once trusted.
I quit matches are usually violent affairs and based on the Extreme Rules match at Mania this one should be no exception.
Legend Killer Match
Singles Match
Chris Jericho
Vs.
Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat
Of the Legends that took on Jericho at WrestleMania it was Steamboat that really stood out above the rest. He looked fresh and performed well above expectations for someone who hasn’t been actively wrestling for well over a decade.
There isn’t much more to say about this one that hasn’t already been said. Jericho wants the Legends to fade away and stop milking the name they created for themselves in their prime, Steamboat wants to prove that the old guys have still got it while silencing the young upstart in the process.
ECW Championship Match
Singles Match
Christian
Vs.
Jack Swagger (c)
Christian needs this victory more than Smackdown needs a new main-eventer. Since his return he’s bounced around WWE’s third brand picking up scraps here and there but never really getting the big wins when it really counted.
He outlasted Mark Henry, Finlay and Tommy Dreamer to win the Chase to Backlash and become the No. 1 contender but just a few days before his shot at the title, current champion Jack Swagger delivered a Powerbomb through a table.
Will Christian will have recovered enough to pull off a crucial victory? Or will Swagger will once again prove his worth and retain his ECW Championship? Either way this will be ECW’s chance to shine at Backlash.
World Heavyweight Championship Match
Last Man Standing Match
Edge
Vs.
John Cena (c)
Cena and Edge have a very storied history and this meeting is being touted as the last match between them (for a while at least.) Cena re-gained the title from Edge at WrestleMania although many think it will be around the waist of the Rated-R Superstar come the end of Backlash as Smackdown is currently without a Heavyweight Championship.
Regardless of the winner the match itself is sure to be a brutal affair with Last Man Standing rules meaning anything goes. Edge has displayed just how mean of a streak he possesses with his actions on Raw and no doubt Cena will be out for revenge.
WWE Championship Match
6-Man Tag Team Match
Randy Orton, Ted DiBiase & Cody Rhodes
Vs.
Triple H (c), Shane McMahon & Batista
The rivalry between Orton’s Legacy and The McMahon Family rages on with a 6-Man Tag Team Match at Backlash. However, this will be no ordinary 6-Man Tag as The Game’s WWE Championship will be on the line in a very strange fashion; should any member of Team Legacy score a pinfall over any member of Team Triple H, Randy Orton will be crowned the new WWE Champion. Not only that, but should any member of Team Triple H get disqualified, Randy Orton will be crowned the new WWE Champion.
The odds certainly seem to be stacked against The Game and with Orton’s constant taunts and jibes The Legend Killer seems quite confident that he will be picking up the title via disqualification when one or more of the oposing team blow their tops.
Triple H’s chances were bolstered slightly with the return of The Animal; Batista who makes a much more formiddable team member than Mr. McMahon, as the Chairman of the Board was more than happy to admit.
Will Team Triple H be able to keep their cool and work together to wipe out Legacy? Or will Orton finally realise his dream and win the WWE Championship at the expense of his former mentor? Find out at Backlash!
