Smackdown Money in the Bank Ladder Match Preview

Raw Money in the Bank Ladder Match Preview

Two very special articles rating each candidates chances of getting their hands on the Blue/Red Briefcases, and odds on who will ultimately leave the show as Mr. Money in the Bank.

    Frank’s Views

The Money in the Bank Ladder match was introduced at WrestleMania XXI and since then has become a staple of the annual spectacular.

Now, it has grown into its own PPV.

The first ever Money in the Bank PPV will be live this Sunday from the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri and will feature a Tag Title match, a Women’s and Divas Title match, a World and WWE Title match, and of course, the two Money in the Bank Ladder matches, one from each brand.

Here is a look at the card.

    Unified Tag Team Championship Match

    Tag Team Match
    The Usos
    Vs.
    The Hart Dynasty (c)

The Hart Dynasty’s big push began at WrestleMania when they were instrumental in helping Bret Hart defeat Vince McMahon.

Shortly afterward they won the tag titles and have held them ever since.

The Usos burst onto the scene a few weeks ago and began weekly attacks on the Hart Dynasty, usually getting the better of the situation.

The fact that they were given a title shot before even having a match in the WWE was a little unusual and is a clear indication that the tag team division and tag wrestling in general is not what it used to be.

The Hart Dynasty make a solid tag team, with D.H. Smith being the muscle and Tyson Kidd covering the mat wrestler and a high-flyer aspects.

They also use the Hart Foundation’s old finisher as a tribute, which is always a plus for nostalgia’s sake if nothing else.

Not much is known about the Usos as in-ring competitors, having had only a handful of matches, most of which were incredibly short, since their arrival,  but they have made it clear they like to use moves like top rope splashes and Samoan drops as a tribute to their heritage.

Prediction: After losing a six person tag to the Usos last week, I expect the Hart Dynasty to get their revenge here and keep the titles, but the feud to move on and continue at least until SummerSlam.

    Womens Championship Match

    Divas Match
    Kelly Kelly
    Vs.
    Layla (c)

Shortly after moving to Smackdown Kelly Kelly began feuding with LayCool, who consider themselves Co-Women’s Champions.

LayCool have mocked Kelly, referring to her as “Smelly” Kelly, which seems a little immature but pales in comparison to the lame weight jokes directed toward Mickie James in their last real feud.

After getting the better of LayCool for weeks, Kelly finally has a title shot, her first in the WWE and even though this is a one-on-one match, Michelle McCool and Tiffany are sure to get involved to spice things up.

Prediction: LayCool have good chemistry together and I expect them to be rewarded with a lengthy title reign, so I see Layla retaining here.

    Divas Championship Match

    Divas Match
    Eve
    Vs.
    Alicia Fox (c)

Two Diva matches on one PPV? That’s highly unusual.

You would like to think that it is a sign that they are starting to care more about the Divas but, in the end, these matches will likely be very short and used as a way to transition between the big matches.

I just don’t think they have any confidence in the Divas pulling off a lengthy match on a PPV.

    Anyway, on to the match.

Alicia was the surprising winner last month at the Fatal 4 Way pay per view and even managed to keep hold of the title when Eve was given a rematch on Raw a couple of weeks ago, faking an ankle injury to get the win.

Both these ladies are still very green in the ring and I’m not sure either one of them is really deserving of being the Divas Champion, but then someone has to be and they don’t really have many other options on Raw.

I would be in favor of Natalya jumping back into the picture at some point, once her rivalry with Tamina comes to a close.

Prediction: After being duped on Raw, I expect Eve to take it to Alicia here, and regain her title.

Smackdown Money in the Bank Match

    Ladder Match
    Kofi Kingston
    Vs.
    Drew McIntyre
    Vs.
    Dolph Ziggler
    Vs.
    The Big Show
    Vs.
    Kane
    Vs.
    ‘Dashing’ Cody Rhodes
    Vs.
    Christian
    Vs.
    Matt Hardy

The winner of this type of match is usually a mid-card guy that the WWE is looking to push up to the next level.

There are many such candidates in this match along with a couple of established stars looking for one more title run.

Here is a look at each of the competitors and their chances of winning.

Big Show - Show will surely throw his weight around in this match and deliver a few knockout blows.

Utlimately though, I don’t see him winning.

The main reason is because, the whole thing is set up for the winner to take advantage of a favorable situation and someone the size of the Big Show should not need such an advantage to become champion.

    Chances: 10%

Matt Hardy - Matt has remained popular with the WWE fans despite not having done much of note in recent years, except for a brief feud with his brother Jeff.

Matt does have a ton of experience in ladder matches, though he hasn’t won many.

I think he will come close here, but eventually come up short.

    Chances: 10%

Christian - Christian has delivered some memorable moments and had a ton of success in tag team ladder matches but can he do it on his own?

Christian has all the tools to become a main event player and has to be considered a serious threat in this match.

    Chances: 20%

Kofi Kingston - Kofi delivered the most memorable spot from the MITB Ladder match at this year’s WrestleMania with his stilts action and is sure to wow the crowd once again here.

Because he is already the IC champ though, it is unlikely that he will win.

    Chances: 10%

Cody Rhodes - Cody has yet to make a big impact on Smackdown, other that being named “most handsome” by the Divas.

He is a talented performer and the WWE loves their second generation stars, but it may be a little early in his singles career to score a win this big.

    Chances: 10%

Kane - Kane will surely wreak havoc on this match, especially with the state of mind he is in.

He is caught up in the whole Undertaker storyline right now, though, so I don’t expect him to win here.

    Chances: 10%

Drew McIntyre - Drew was getting a big push a while back and I actually though he would win the MITB Ladder match at WrestleMania.

His push has subsided since then but his feud with Smackdown G.M Theodore Long has kept him in the spotlight.

He’s got the tools to be a major star but I’m not sure he’s ready to move to the next level just yet.

    Chances: 15%

Dolph Ziggler - Dolph biggest accomplishment of late in bringing back the sleeper as one of the most deadly holds in the WWE.

He has also developed a relationship with Vickie Guerrero, something that served Edge very well in the past.

Are similar results in store for Dolph?

    Chances: 15%

Prediction: Based on the promo a few weeks back, I think it will come down to Christian and Matt Hardy. By the way, I agree with what they said about them being the most deserving of winning this match. In the end, I see Christian as the better all-around talent, so I am picking him to score his biggest win ever, propelling him to the next level.

Raw Money in the Bank Match

    Ladder Match
    The Miz
    Vs.
    Mark Henry
    Vs.
    Edge
    Vs.
    Randy Orton
    Vs.
    John Morrison
    Vs.
    Chris Jericho
    Vs.
    Ted DiBiase
    Vs.
    Evan Bourne

This match has a little more star power than the Smackdown version but will one of the major stars win?

Or will the trend continue with someone getting elevated to the next level.

Here is a look at each competitor and their chances.

Randy Orton - Despite his loss to Edge on Raw, Orton has been on a roll of late and his popularity is at an all-time high.

He unhooked the briefcase after a tag match on Raw a few weeks back, was it a sign of things to come?

Despite his relative lack of experience in this match, he goes in as one of the big favorites.

    Chances: 25%

John Morrison - Morrison is the only “Tough Enough” winner to have had any real success in the WWE.

He is a great athlete who should be at home in this type of match.

I think he could be a future WWE champion but he hasn’t made a huge impact since moving to Raw, though, so a win here would be a longshot.

    Chances: 5%

Mark Henry -  Henry was thrown into the mix to be the big man who tosses all the smaller guys around.

He should dominate portions of the match but not a real threat to win it.

    Chances: 5%

Evan Bourne - Bourne was made for this type of match.

The exciting high-flyer will surely provide some awe-inspiring moments here.

He has gotten a nice push of late but a win here may be a little out of his reach.

    Chances: 5%

Ted Dibiase - Dibiase is currently working the priviledged son gimmick and has added the beautiful Maryse as his valet/girlfriend.

Considering that he currently comes out with the million dollar belt, I don’t see him being in line for a WWE title anytime soon.

    Chances: 5%

Chris Jericho - Jericho is the man credited with coming up with the whole MITB concept.

He has a lot of experience in ladder matches and has had quite a bit of success as well, while always putting on a great show.

Has to be considered a real threat and a win here would be a nice bit of Karma after he was a victim of the MITB circumstances a few months ago.

    Chances: 25%

Edge - Edge is the king of the ladder match.

First, dominating in tag team action and then becoming the first MITB winner.

He promised that the fun will begin this Sunday which seems to suggest he will have a major role.

    A top candidate to win.

    Chances: 25%

The Miz - Miz already took out one of the original competitors, injuring R-Truth on Raw.

He is a top notch, charismatic performer who I could see as WWE champion some day.

Because he is currently the U.S. champ, though, I don’t see him winning here.

    Chances: 5%

Prediction: Even though, a mid-card talent usually wins this match, I have a feeling that here, it will not be the case.

I like one of the established stars (Orton, Jericho, Edge) to win.

Jericho and Edge both suggested that they would like to lead The Nexus, so one possibility would be that the Nexus would interfere, helping one of them win, after which they would be revealed as the leader.

The more likely scenario, though, is that The Nexus interference will take place in the WWE title match.

So, I’m going with Randy Orton, who is really over right now and deserving of another WWE title reign.

    World Heavyweight Championship Match

    Singles Match
    Jack Swagger
    Vs.
    Rey Mysterio (c)

Rey shocked the world by winning the World title at the Fatal 4 Way PPV, which he accomplished by pinning Swagger, who he had also defeated on Smackdown. So you could say he had Swagger’s number.

Swagger would go into a rage over losing his title and he would break out a new move; The AnkleLock.

Actually, he ripped it off Kurt Angle who had ripped it off Ken Shamrock.

Anyway, after breaking out the move on The Big Show, Swagger would bust it out again on Rey Mysterio, once in a match, then attacking him when he was on the trainer’s table.

So, the tables seemed to turn in Swagger’s favour going into MITB.

However, the monster Kane is now in the picture.

He now believes Swagger is the one who attacked the Undertaker and is out for revenge, and even if Swagger proves himself innocent days before on Smackdown, will that be enough to appease The Big Red Machine, or will he get involved on Sunday?

The match itself would have been an interesting contrast in styles between Rey’s high-flying and Swagger’s mat wrestling, but with Rey grounded by the injury I expect Swagger to control the match, waiting for the right time to strike with the AnkleLock.

Prediction: I was worried at first, based on the happenings on Smackdown, that we were going to get a DQ ending, which I hate on PPV. Now, however, Rey has a built-in injury excuse if he loses, so I think that is where this is headed. I think Swagger may even be awarded the title on a referee stoppage so they can build up Rey’s toughness for not giving up. If Kane interferes, I believe it will only be after the match is over.

    WWE Championship Match

    Cage Match
    John Cena
    Vs.
    Sheamus (c)

Sheamus knows how to take the gold from Cena, having done so twice in the past year already.

The build up for this match has been somewhat awkward in that Cena has spent all his time and energy feuding with The Nexus, and this match has been treated almost as an afterthought even though it is for the WWE title.

Steel Cage matches generally end feuds so this should be the end of the Cena/Sheamus saga, at least for now.

The reason given for this being a steel cage match is to keep The Nexus out, but unless they are physically incapable of climbing the cage, that will not necessarily be the case.

Cena has asked for Sheamus to join forces with him to help fight off The Nexus which he did at the end of Raw, but I have a feeling that it was just for show.

One thing’s for sure, they will be on opposite sides this Sunday, in a match I expect Cena to dominate, letting out all his pent up frustrations.

    But will he win?

Prediction: I think that the Nexus will interfere, costing Cena the title once again. Afterward, I think it’s possible that Sheamus, who has benefitted the most by the actions of the Nexus, may even be revealed as the leader of the group.
